Physical Hand-In_

My stop motion of my favourite series of photos. I’ll possibly make the other series into stop motions just for fun… :)

Proposal etc.

After having chosen my place, Waitangi Skate Park, I thought about the feelings and emotions I felt from that particular place and what it came down to was uneasiness, that the place was dodgy. After finalizing my emotions on that particular place, I went out and experimented with some initial shots. I knew I had to avoid taking photos of just ‘cement’ because it wouldn’t be much of a ‘place’ styled photograph. I thought encorporating some graffiti would be a decent idea because graffiti in itself exudes this feeling of unease because it relates to gangs which brings about the assumption of violence and drugs. With all this in mind, I took some shots and came up with my final four.

Initial Shoot;

It was a good time of the day after it had been raining all morning and so the fog and puddles made for a good vibe. After analyzing my initial shots I thought about incorporating a person within the frame. Unfortunately that was easier said than done and It ended up looking like I was intentionally trying to capture skateboarders skateboarding. I decided that the best option was to take them without people in them. I’ve kept one of my initial shots which I really liked and have now included new but similiar shots in my final.

The Letter

For some reason my image was refusing to load on tumblr. Working on getting it up.

Anyways, I wrote my letter to facebook complaining about how frequently they change their sites layout consequently confusing their users for a period of days, so I suggested a few ways to improve that avoid frustrating their users. :)

The Letter

The full message is this;

Dear Facebook,

            I’ve been a regular user and supporter of your website for five years. In those five years I have suffered the aftermath of your countless changes and redesigns to your homepages and sites basic functions. I understand that it’s all about trial and error and that you’re only trying to improve the website but something I feel that is very important, especially for such a popular site such as yours is that consistency is comfort.

            The world today is accepting many alterations. I can understand why you feel that you should alter your site too. But in the five years that I have been a friendly face to the website I have never once been asked for my opinion or input concerning the sites functioning abilities. Your site would just happen to change one day and I’d be forced to introduce myself to a new routine. Now I know that if an aspect of the site seems to be causing some trouble you would consequently go change it but it seems that you wait and wait and wait until multiple things seem to cause problems and so you go and change everything. Maybe it’s best if you changed it slowly one at a time, allowing your users to get used to it piece by piece rather than submerge us in your world of changes. Another important aspect of design to keep in mind is that simplicity is successful. The more complicated you make it, the harder it is to use and then the less the public will want to use it. Something my math teacher once taught me that could help you out. KISS. Keep it simple, stupid! I think the best thing for your site is to start asking your users for advice, after all you wouldn’t be anything without us. Then based off of that go and make minor changes bit by bit rather than all at once.

            In the end, facebook is a huge part of society. It’s important though to understand that your users choose to use facebook and they could just as easily choose not to and with that said, you should honour those who have committed to your site.

The Word
Originally, I hung strings along the fence dangling down but it didn’t spell the word strong enough for me. So after a little debate, I moved the string onto a grid on the ground. Almost as if you’re looking into hell. I was aiming for relevance to hell. I ended up with this image of bright red ribbon spelling out hell over a grate. This exudes an abandoned feeling as well as hopefully leaving the viewer curious to know what lies beneath. The importance in my image is that that feeling of hell is felt and as a viewer you feel that you want to know what lies below, or what comes next - your pizza :)

This is my storyboard for my Stop Motion project. I decided to do it like a technical drawing. Not erasing what was already there, working over writing, drawings and so on. This is important to me so that any viewer can sort of begin to understand the mental process I went through in order to reach some of the decisions I made. It’s also a concept i’m comfortable with and enjoy doing; adding side notes, arrows, post-it’s and rough sketches. It makes for an interesting image in the end.. which is good because consequently it is a design that grabs your attention - my message for this project.

EX7: Stencil - My final product. Had a few complications, but otherwise I think it looks pretty neat. If you’re in need of a super hand model, Ashleigh Stephens is the girl. :)

The Poster

For my poster, I decided to compare the two common forms of listening to music. Headphones and earphones. Now in the end I decided I was in favour of headphones because they we’re comfortable, styly and provided a much better quality of sound compared to the earphones. For my precedent image I copied the style of cooky yoon. The style cooky had was multiple images compiled onto one page so I decided I’d follow that but instead of whole images, incorporate parts of the headphones and earphones to piece together my general idea.

The Six Drawings
I experimented with the styles of drawing I favored throughout the semester. Such as continuous lines and the solid black and white simple style. This is my final composition of my drawings.
